The first FX body! - what happened before the decision?

Well, it's very hard to explain what I feel now. I'm a lucky and proud owner of a D600 - but it hasn't been the case until this week. Very fresh experiences straight from a new FX owner!

Okay, so I started to take photography more seriously in April 2017. I was using my dad's Nikon D50 with a 18-55mm kit lens and a 70-300mm Tamron tele-macro lens. Of course, I fell in love with the Tamron, since I could take more professional looking pictures with it than with the kit lens (actually nearly anything gives better quality photos than the kit lens). The D50 only has a 3008x2000 pixels resolution (6.1 megapixel), which, to be honest isn't that much in 2017. I must admit I could take absolutely okay pictures with it, but for a res-whore like me it wasn't much.

I took this photo with the Nikon D50 and the Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 LD

So, it was time for me to buy a new camera! Because I already owned two Nikon F mount lenses, it was a no-brainer which company to choose. I went with the Nikon D3200. I really liked it, but of course I had a strong feeling, that it's very far from the premium category - which is fine for less than $200 used. But it's got the job done! I only had one problem: I haven't done my research deep enough, and since the Tamron lens wasn't made with an AF motor (just the Di LD variant), it didn't work with the D3200, which doesn't include an AF motor. I was surprised at first, but it was a very good lesson, and another reason to dive into photography and DSLRs more deeply. The outcome: I sold the Tamron lens, and for the same price I got the Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 ED G lens. It was the best kit lens for the D70 back in the days. With this kit, I went to Italy for 6 days. The results weren't bad, but my friend came with a D3300 and a 35mm f/1.8G prime. When I compared my photos to his photos, I knew: I have to buy a new lens.

This is with the D3200 paired with the Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 ED G lens. Not bad, but still, far from the best.

The next step was to get a summer job. I worked 33 days in total this summer, and since tomorrow we'll start the last week of August, I have nearly all the salaries as of now. But when I realised how much money I got this summer, I thought: maybe I should sell all the photo gear I bought in the last quarter year, and completely start over - with a high end camera?

And after days of thinking my answer to myself was yes. I sold everything (except the D50 kit) and I bought the Nikon D600 with the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G. And boy, oh boy, it was the best decision I made in this year. I'll cover why, in the next post! Stay tuned!
